Organic Clothing Takes off in Italy

ITALY: ORGANIC CLOTHING SUITS

May 11, 2003 Greenplanet

After the boom of organic agriculture we will have the boom of the organic clothes? The pioneers in the field are convinced of it.  50 specialized stores ten companies are following in the footsteps of the natural food industry. "Organic clothes are those for which no chemical synthetic substance is used in the productive cycle" according to Giuditta Blandini, owner of the ³Stile Biologico² ("Biological Style") store.  "A study in Tuscany by a dermatological institute² - Blandini continues ³ showed that approximately 10% of contact allergies are provoked by chemical colouring used to dye the fabrics.

The advantages to the environment are enormous. We think that cotton cultivation accounts for 33% of the pesticide use in the third world. In order to cultivate the organic fabrics these pesticides are not used, and therefore enormous advantages are created for manufacturers and for the whole system." In other countries there is already more development but as usual the ³Made in Italy² will take more time. Alessandra Cavicchioli, manager of the store "Bio in Body", explains: "in Europe organic clothes are already widely sold in countries like Germany, Sweden, Norway and Holland.  However, the products made in Italy differ completely in the handiwork, the quality of the weave, and the style".

Organic clothes, as for foods, cost more, "but a buyer² continues Cavicchioli ³who is interested to the product is disposed to spend a few more Euro particularly if he considers that the product will last a long time.²
