Two Important US Research
Centers Shun GE Wheat

TWO RESEARCH CENTERS DECIDE NOT TO PLANT
BIOTECH WHEAT TEST PLOTS

May 7, 2002

Associated Press

GRAND FORKS, N.D. - Two North Dakota State University extension research
centers -- the North Central Research Extension Center in Minot and the
Carrington Research Extension Center -- have, according to this story,
decided not to plant test plots of spring wheat that is genetically changed
to be immune to the herbicide Roundup.

The story says that the Minot center is considered an important source of
foundation seed, which is used to produce registered and certified seed used
by farmers. Center director Jay Fisher was cited as saying that ensuring
the purity of the state's publicly developed seed varieties was a major
reason it decided not to get involved in the trials.

The Langdon Research Extension Center will conduct nursery trials on Roundup
Ready wheat. Research Extension Centers in Dickinson, Streeter, Hettinger
and Williston had not planned to be part of the trials.
