Our Cooperative Structure

Did you know that Organic Valley Family of Farms™ is the largest organic farmer-owned cooperative in North America? This part of our identity is lesser known than our organic identity, but just as important to us! Being a cooperative means that the farm families that produce Organic Valley™'s brown eggs and dairy products, as well as certified organic meat products are the direct owners of the business. From the time we began, with only seven Wisconsin farmers, to the present with over 548 farmer members in fourteen states, our farmers have been directly involved in every decision we make. Over the years, we've learned a lot about how to organize, govern, and make decisions for ourselves.

The Most Successful Organic Farmer-Owned Cooperative in the World Each year we elect a hard-working board of directors, as well as having representatives meet monthly in each region. We publish a quarterly newsletter to keep all our members informed. Each farm family that seeks membership makes a serious investment in having a voice in their own future. Speaking as this year's president, I'm proud to say that Organic Valley™ serves as a model for the most successful organic farmer's cooperative in the world. We host tours and provide guidance for delegations of farmers that trek to our headquarters in rural La Farge, Wisconsin on a regular basis.

Why is Being a Cooperative Important to Us? The support and resources of being part of a big extended family comes in mighty handy in the agricultural world, where large corporations have taken over 600,000 family farms since 1960. As the sole owners, we make all the important decisions for our company. That gives us independence, and stability for our families and our way of life. We decide what new products to introduce, how to allocate our profits, and most importantly, what our stable milk pay price will be. And yet, that is exactly what non-organic dairy farmers are asked to do.
