About
Patagonia
Design at Patagonia begins with a need. Our products must be
simple, functional and suitable to the task at hand. The function
dictates the form. If we've done our homework, if we have not
compromised on the process, the aesthetics will follow. We design
so that you forget you're wearing the clothes or carrying your
gear, and focus on the experience. And we're constantly trying
to improve upon tried and true designs, using data from extensive
lab and field tests, as well as the experience of fellow employees
and customers to craft designs that result in the most functional
gear possible. Read more about some of our design innovations,
below.
Sports
We Do
Committed to the Soul of the Sport There is
much to be gained from living life outside, in near and far
away places, when the outcome is a gamble and the warm flush
of adrenaline is the only guarantee. This is the soul of the
sport: wild, free and introspective, continually bringing us
into the boundaries of our physical and mental limitations;
sport allows us to know ourselves better, all the time. Our
commitment to sport has come to include the many passions of
fellow employees and friends, from climbing to surfing to trail
running. Check out our Sports We Do pages (below) for reflections
on sport from some of our employees, as well as recommended
clothing systems, ambassador updates and more.
Our
Culture
Committed to Uncommon Culture. We prefer the human
scale to the corporate, vagabonding to tourism, the quirky and
lively to the toned down and flattened out. We used to call
our own world of alpinists and surfers a dirtbag culture: of
temp jobs and long summers; of foraged meals and tribal travel
that followed the seasons, from summer climbs in Yosemite to
Baja’s winter surfbreaks to spring kayaking. And if many of
us now work more than we climb, and care more for our families
than for bumming about, we still sound our appeal to the dirtbag
within, the need for the wild dirtbag spirit to survive in our
e’d-out culture.
Enviro-Action
Grassroots Environmental Activism Since 1985,
we've donated 10 percent of our annual profits (or 1 percent
of sales, whichever is greater) to hundreds of grassroots environmental
groups – $17 million in cash and another several million in
gear. We also know that all our business activity - from lighting
our stores to dyeing our clothes – creates pollution as its
by-product. We work steadily to reduce those harms; to choose
less harmful catalog stock or energy sources, to use recycled
polyester where we can, and to use only organic rather than
pesticide-intensive conventional cotton.
