Labor and environmental groups forge alliance to take on StarbucksSeattle WA- The International Union of Operating Engineers, along
with the Organic Consumers Association and Friends of the Earth are
joining together for an international demonstration against Starbucks.
Starbucks’ workers came together to form a union over a year ago. Since that time management has stalled and delayed bargaining for a first contract. Recently, Starbucks went to the extreme of fostering enough of an anti-union environment for a decertification petition to be filed to try and oust the union. Fortunately, the workers prevailed and the union won! Shareholders must be informed that Starbucks is employing these extreme measures to squelch the rights of its workers. Starbucks’ maintenance mechanic, Jeff Brazeal, wants shareholders and the public to know, “We began a public campaign last year when Starbucks made it clear that they wanted to bust our union. Now that they weren’t successful, we will be on every street corner, if we have to, until we get a fair contract!” “Starbucks didn’t kill us when they tried to bust our union, they only made us stronger. We are here for the long haul. We’re forming coalitions with fair trade and environmental groups to spread the word,” says maintenance mechanic, Jeff Alexander. “People will soon be very aware that the latte’ they get each morning is being produced by ravaging the environment and assaulting the rights of workers. There is only one thing that seems to matter to this company. Profit!” |
