Where the Wild Things Are

Description
Walking tours: See wild greens and mushrooms in their natural habitat, a rehabilitated trout stream, a pond and artesian spring, native plants, bluffs, managed pasture and a 300-year-old savanna with remains of a pioneer’s cabin. Tours will start at 11:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m., with more walks possible after dinner. Guides are Ralph Lentz (farm owner and teacher) and Larry Gates (forager and retired DNR ecologist). Appetizers: Bread and fruit at 1 p.m. Picnic dinner: The menu will feature braised boar with nettles, ramps, fresh mushrooms and wild asparagus. Local wine and beer and fresh lemonade will be served. Dinner will start around 3 p.m., so eat a big breakfast. Bring: • Blankets or chairs for the picnic. • Dessert to share, if you wish. The rules: Children must be supervised at all times, especially if they visit livestock, hike near bluffs or go near electric fences. Pets are not permitted. Event will take place rain or shine. Indoor shelter will be available in case of rain.

Slow Food MN: Seth Bixby Daugherty on Good Food in Schools

• Chef Seth Bixby Daugherty will talk about Real Food Initiatives, the organization he formed with his wife, Karen, to raise awareness of food issues in schools and bring change to the status quo. • We welcome you to submit recipes for the dishes you bring to the potluck for a new Slow Food Minnesota cookbook. Dishes brought should use traditional methods and/or local ingredients when possible. At the end of the year, the recipes will be compiled into a cookbook available for purchase, with proceeds benefiting Slow Food Minnesota. • A grillmaster will be on hand, and meat and veggie burgers will be served, provided by Slow Food. • The event takes place at the picnic shelter at Hidden Falls Park in Saint Paul. The park is just south of Ford Parkway on Mississippi River Blvd. S (East River Road). There is ample parking at the shelter, or better yet, ride your bike and enjoy the wonderful trails along the river.
