Cross-pollination reported by Scottish Crop Research Institute
The Scottish Crop Research Institute recently reported that
experiments with larger fields of genetically engineered
oilseed rape show that pollen escaped and fertilized plants
2.5 kilometers away. This could result in herbicide-resistant
crops spreading to become weeds in other fields. Previously,
studies suggested that so little pollen spread from
genetically altered crops that there was no significant
danger of the genes crossing into other plants. The new
findings question recent moves in the United States and
Europe to relax the rules for genetically approved crops.
