H.R. 1599 is a bill that would preempt states' rights to enact GMO labeling laws, keep consumers in the dark about what's in their food, and create an unwieldy and unnecessary federal scheme for voluntary labeling of non-GMO foods. That’s why it’s known as the DARK Act. It would Deny Americans the Right to Know.

It would stop Vermont’s law requiring labels on food made with genetically modified organisms from taking effect. It would repeal Alaska’s 2005 law requiring labels on genetically engineered fish. It would stop us from passing any more state GMO labeling laws. And, it would make sure the Food & Drug Administration never required GMO labels nationally.

H.R. 1599 would let GMO foods be labeled “natural.”

But that’s not all that Rep. Mike Pompeo’s (R-Kan.) wrongly-named “Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act” would do to deprive us of the common-sense GMO regulations enjoyed in other developed nations. The bill goes after pre-market safety testing, and GMO-free zones, too.

Here’s what will happen if H.R. 1599 becomes law:

No hope of ever getting GMOs safety tested. The FDA would be stopped from ever heeding the American Medical Association’s 2012 call for “mandatory pre-market systematic safety assessments of bioengineered foods.” Instead, Congress would enshrine in permanent law the FDA’s 1992 policy of allowing companies with new GMOs to go through a voluntary consultation process that the agency admits doesn’t determine safety.

No more local protections for non-GMO agriculture. Farming communities would be stripped of their right to create the GMO-free agricultural zones that are necessary to protect high-value non-GMO agriculture from GMO contamination. The GMO-free zones that protect Oregon’s world-renowned seed growing regions and California’s largest alfalfa growing area would be gone.

If this bill passes, Monsanto will be able to continue to claim to be “feeding the world” while they are force feeding us GMO crops, 99.7 percent of which are engineered to poison us with pesticides. We’ll be trapped like guinea pigs in their dangerous experiment with untested, unlabeled GMOs that will eventually contaminate the entire food supply forever.

This is just one more example of industry lobbyists hijacking the political system to write laws that protect corporate profits at the expense of public health.

Your representatives need to hear from you that this bill is an attack on consumer rights and states’ rights, and that you expect your elected officials to protect you, not corporate and shareholder profits. Please contact them today.
