“A speaker at a 1999 biotech conference revealed that his consulting company was helping Monsanto executives achieve their ideal future, where the company would genetically engineer and patent 100% of all commercial seeds in the world. Another speaker went so far as to predict that 95% natural seeds would be replaced as early as 2004.

Although GMO proponents portrayed their technology as safe, predictable, and even natural, experts and the public saw through the lies. Now half the world’s population appropriately believe that GMO foods are not safe for human health. And there’s plenty of science to back that up.

Concerns about GMO dangers derailed Monsanto’s timeline. The number of commercialized GMO food crops capped at about a dozen.

Gene editing threatens all that.

The GMO industry has ushered in their new methods of creating GMOs—gene editing—using the same rhetoric from decades earlier. They misrepresent the technology as safe, predictable, and natural.

Unfortunately, many governments fell prey to these lies and have institutionalized this fraud. The United States, Japan, Australia, Argentina, Brazil, India and others ‘deregulated’ gene editing. England, Canada, and possibly the EU are making moves to do the same.”

Medea Benjamin explains on Democracy Now:

“Negotiations are not only possible; they are absolutely essential. There have been some negotiations on key issues so far, such as the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant, such as getting the grain out of Ukraine, such as the prisoner swaps. But there have been no negotiations on the big issues. And Antony Blinken, the [U.S.] secretary of state, has not met with [Russian Foreign Minister] Lavrov. We just heard in that clip how Biden does not want to talk to Putin. The only way this war is going to end is by negotiations.

And we have seen the U.S. actually torpedo negotiations, starting from the proposals that the Russians put forward right before the invasion, which was summarily dismissed by the U.S. And then we saw, when the Turkish government was mediating talks at the end of March, early April, how it was the U.K. president, Boris Johnson, as well as Secretary of Defense Austin, who torpedoed those negotiations.

So, I don’t think that it is realistic to think that there is going to be a clear victory by the Ukrainians that are going to be able to get back every inch of territory like they’re now saying, including Crimea and all of Donbas. There has to be compromises on both sides. And we, the American public, have to push the White House and our leaders in Congress to call for proactive negotiations now.”

“It should be obvious to most Americans the state is not working in their best interest. Approval of Congress is at an all-time low, although, since July, it has risen from 17 percent to 22 percent. When polled, Americans single out inflation and the economy, the affordability of healthcare, and violent crime as the most important issues. Fear of Russia figures far down on the list.

For the state, the primary focus is not the health and security of the American people. No, for the state and its ‘partners’ and ‘stakeholders,’ the primary focus is war, theft, and subjugation in the name of neoliberal conquest.

Most people understand, if often vaguely, the endpoint of war—the collapse of civilization, possibly the end of life on the planet. The average person believes negotiations should be front and center when a war begins, but this is anathema to the “humanitarian interventionists” now in charge of foreign policy…

‘The Eurasia Group Foundation released a new survey asking Americans if our government should negotiate with adversaries. Nearly twice as many Americans said they want more talks compared to those calling for less diplomacy.’”

The main issue that radicalized me when I first became a student activist in the 1960s was war, the actual bloody war going on in Viet-Nam, and the always pending war, permanently etched into the back of my mind, the threat of nuclear war between Russia and the United States. I became a draft resister in 1967, like hundreds of thousands of others, and refused to go to Viet-Nam, opting to become a non-violent warrior for peace and justice instead.

The nuclear standoff that traumatized me and a whole generation of anti-war and civil rights activists arose during the Cuban missile crisis of October 16-28, 1962—60 years ago.

Years later I learned that a global catastrophe in October 1962 was averted only because a Soviet submarine commander, off the coast of Cuba, disobeyed orders to fire his nuclear missiles, after a U.S. naval vessel dropped explosive depth-charges, trying to force the Russian submarine to the surface. The 1962 nuclear standoff between the United States and the Soviet Union, eerily reminiscent of the current nuclear standoff in Ukraine, was precipitated by American deployment of nuclear missiles in Turkey, adjacent to the borders of the USSR, prompting Soviet deployment of intermediate atomic missiles in Cuba.

Once again it’s time for all of us to stand up for peace and sanity. Forty percent of Americans currently believe that we need to negotiate an end to the war in Ukraine, but we need to educate and mobilize the majority. Most of the members of Congress and the White House are still banging the drums of war, cowardly angling for reelection or donor dollars. Spending for war, weapons, and CIA operations now total 1.4 trillion dollars annually. We obviously need to redirect this money to rebuilding our economy and our nation.
