Children's Health

The New MDS: What’s in Our Kids’ School Lunches?

As of 2011, 43% of US children (32 million) had chronic health conditions, increasing to 54.1% when overweight, obesity, or being at risk for developmental delays was included. This data is 13 years old and newer studies suggest that these numbers continue to escalate to shocking levels.

As any parent knows, trying to get to the root cause of common problems like extra weight, allergies, asthma, gastrointestinal upset, eczema, learning challenges or behavioral issues can be maddening.

Thankfully, there are some moms, doctors and scientists out there who don’t give up.

In this conversation, Organic Consumers Association’s Political Director Alexis Baden-Mayer talks to three such women: pediatrician Dr. Michelle Perro, scientist Dr. Stephanie Seneff, and Moms Across America founder Zen Honeycutt.

These three super sleuths investigated common toxic exposures, widespread health disorders and the medical literature until they identified a central factor in what’s making our children sick: Foods that have been genetically engineered to soak up Monsanto (now Bayer)’s glyphosate-based Roundup weed killer.

They didn’t stop there. Watch this information-packed interview to learn more.

FOOD JUSTICE

Food Marketing to Kids and People of Color

A coalition of 21 leading advocacy groups, led by Fairplay, a nonprofit children’s advocacy group, and the Center for Digital Democracy, has filed a petition with the Federal Trade Commission to stop online platforms from manipulating children into spending excessive time online.

The petition describes how the vast majority of apps, games, and services popular with kids:

• Generate revenue primarily via advertising

• Employ sophisticated techniques (e.g., autoplay, endless scroll, and strategically timed advertisements) to cultivate lucrative long term relationships between minors and their brands.

• Use platforms like TikTok, Twitter, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat to keep kids online…

The Fauci Fraud: Sam Husseini

Sam Husseini writes:

“Fauci has been at the center of one of the most massive propaganda campaigns in human history. His selling of Covid origins reveals a disinformation campaign that threatens humanity with biowarfare. It’s not simply that Fauci didn’t do anything positive regarding Covid origins.

The evidence is that he did all in his substantial power to cover up the very real possibility of lab origin — at the very minimum. Further, he has long championed dangerous lab work, facilitated and funded it — and rebuked other scientists when they objected. Moreover, Fauci controls the purse strings for many scientists — so they feel obvious pressure to cater to his designs if they want to continue getting funding…”

WATER

Why America’s Food Security Crisis is a Water Crisis as Well

Leli Nargi writes in The Fern:

“As with hunger, there are myriad reasons a person might be water insecure—some financial, some structural, and others having to do with quality and access. Still others are short-term predicaments brought on by disaster or a failure of local government… many Americans spend more than 12 percent of their income for water and sewer service. Others have lead pipes that contaminate tap water (Newark); or bacteria seeping into wells (Iowa); or sewage backing up into pipes during storms (Milwaukee); or nitrates running off farm fields (Las Vegas). A storm may knock out the electricity that pumps water (Puerto Rico), or knock out the pump itself (Jackson). Residents of the Navajo Nation lack basic water infrastructure. Then there are regions where aquifers are running dry, such as in California’s Central Valley.

Water poverty has a lot to do with health beyond the primary need to drink a couple of liters a day. Perhaps most consequentially, research shows that children exposed to lead can suffer developmental delays and brain damage. Rosinger also found that people who avoid tap water are more likely to drink sugar sweetened beverages (SSBs, in public health parlance). This alternative ups their risk for obesity, diabetes and other diet-related diseases, with the implications most long-lasting for children.”

BIG FOOD

Millions Suffer as Junk Food Industry Rakes in Profits

Colin Toddhunter reports on a recent peer-reviewed study in Brazil and its applicability to North America and Europe:

“Increased consumption of ultraprocessed foods (UPFs) was associated with more than 10% of all-cause premature, preventable deaths in Brazil in 2019. That is the finding of a new peer-reviewed study in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.

The findings are significant not only for Brazil but also for high income countries such as the U S, Canada, the UK, and Australia, where UPFs account for more than half of total calorific intake.

Brazilians consume far less of these products than countries with high incomes. This means the estimated impact would be even higher in richer nations.

UPFs are ready-to-eat-or-heat industrial formulations made with ingredients extracted from foods or synthesized in laboratories. These have gradually been replacing traditional foods and meals made from fresh and minimally processed ingredients in many countries.

The study found that approximately 57,000 deaths in one year could be attributed to the consumption of UPFs – 10.5% of all premature deaths and 21.8% of all deaths from preventable noncommunicable diseases in adults aged 30 to 69…”

PUBLIC HEALTH

Americans Actually Agree on Something—They Want Food & Other Products Free from Chemical Contamination

A new poll, conducted in October, finds that voters overwhelmingly support the regulation of toxic chemicals, and are most concerned about water, food and food packaging exposures. As Brian Bienkowski reports in Environmental Health News:

“Americans want government and industry to get harmful chemicals out of our products, according to a survey of 1,200 registered voters commissioned by the Program on Reproductive Health and the Environment at the University of California, San Francisco. More than 90% of those surveyed supported the notion that the government should require products be proven safe before they are put on the market.

At a time when most issues are politically polarized, the issue of keeping people safe from harmful chemicals finds widespread agreement among Democrats, Republicans and Independent voters,” said Celinda Lake — president of Lake Research Partners, which conducted the poll — in a statement. A majority of those polled are even willing to pay more for protection from toxics: 93% agree (57% strongly agree) that it’s important to remove harmful chemicals from our homes, workplaces and schools even if it increases the costs of some products. [In addition] 76% were concerned about the impact of chemicals and plastics on climate change [and] 54% said chemical regulations aren’t strong enough…”

REGENERATION

Soil Health is Human Health

Naomi Starkman writes in Civil Eats:

“In their new book, What Your Food Ate: How to Restore Our Land and Reclaim Our Health, geologist David R. Montgomery and biologist Anne Biklé make a compelling argument that regenerative farming practices result in healthier soil and higher nutrient density in food.

In the book, the husband-and-wife team share the results of their own extensive research and the existing literature on soil health. Conventional farming practices, including tillage and commercial fertilizers, disrupt the necessary, healthy symbiosis between plants and the soil, they write, noting, ‘We traded away quality in pursuit of quantity as modernized farming chased higher yields, overlooking a farmer’s natural allies in the soil.’

We spoke with them recently about the nutrients that set food grown with regenerative practices apart, and why they believe those practices, including the no-till method’s greater capacity for holding water and preventing soil erosion, could be a key solution to drought in the West…”

SUPPORT OCA & CRL

Organic & Regenerative as the Norm

OCA, Regeneration International, and Hudson Carbon are currently working on a grassroots-powered global campaign to help make the best practices of organic and regenerative food, farming, land use, and health the norm, rather than just the alternative. While defending ourselves and our communities from the now daily assaults of a global cabal—WEF, Bill Gates, Monsanto/Bayer and the Poison Cartel, Big Pharma, indentured gene engineers, bioweapons scientists, and militarists engaged in “Russian Roulette,” we are committed to keeping our eyes on the prize. In these troubled times, we pledge to stop the madness and build a new organic commonwealth on the ruins of the old.

Among our most important tasks are to strengthen local-to-global farmer, consumer, and natural health networks; unite the organic and grass-fed/pasture raised-movements; identify and publicize the best organic and regenerative farming and grazing practices that can be scaled up; and, last but not least, find additional funding and support to improve and expand our alternative food and agriculture system.

A key aspect of getting funding for farmers, ranchers, and rural communities on the ground to improve and scale up their organic and regenerative practices, while attracting organic-minded impact investors to increase market access and build organic/regenerative infrastructure, is our coalition’s work to finalize and roll-out a new system of “Regenerative Organic Carbon Credits.” (ROCCs).

We have been working with our sister organizations, Regeneration International and Hudson Carbon, on the ROCC project for the past three years. In previous issues of Organic Bytes, we have publicized the work of the farmers in the Organic and Regenerative Investment Coop in Australia who have pioneered the ROCC process, measuring, monetizing, and rewarding organic and regenerative best practices, while attracting new investors for improved organic market access and infrastructure development.

ROCCs are designed to reward organic best practitioners (i.e. not the “corporate organic” imposters trying to drag down standards) for the full environmental, health, and social benefits of their hard work and stewardship as well as their climate-healthy soil and above ground carbon sequestration. The idea is to revitalize pre-existing networks of organic farmers and certifiers, (literally millions of organic farmers in more than 100 nations) helping them achieve their full potential to become truly regenerative, while simultaneously motivating millions of presently de facto organic, but non-certified, farmers and grazers to get certified and become potentially eligible for a new “Regenerative Organic Carbon Plus” system. The ROCC system will provide an alternative to the now heavily discredited system of carbon credits and carbon trading (a 65 billion-dollar annual market) which amounts to little more than greenwashing for Big Ag, Big Food, and the Big Polluters.

As partisans in the organic movement we are proud of creating a massive global network of producers and consumers for organic foods and products. But, in the face of a life or death crisis, we are expanding our ranks, market share, and acreage far too slowly. Meanwhile most small, indigenous, and disadvantaged farmers and low-income consumers are still being marginalized or left behind.

We need your help and participation to not only safeguard the integrity of organics, but, over the next decade, to make Organic and Regenerative food, farming, land use, and health the norm, not just the alternative.
