Who Opposes GMO Labeling?

Over the past 10+ years since GMOs have been introduced into our food system, polls have consistently shown that over 90 percent of Americans approve of GMO labeling.

Despite the overwhelming consumer support for labeling, and despite his campaign promise to label GMOs and his executive order directing Congress not to preempt state laws, on July 29, 2016, President Obama signed into law a federal bill that preempts Vermont's mandatory GMO labeling law.

Why? Because our politicians worship at the altar of special interest money.

Large biotech corporations and junk food manufacturers spent over $400 million to defeat GMO labeling initiatives and proposed laws.  They hired the best public relations firms money could buy, to create slick campaigns using fear and lies to convince consumers to vote against their own best interests.

One of the biggest but perhaps most convincing lies Monsanto and Big Food perpetuated was that mandatory labeling laws would result in higher costs for manufacturers, who would then have to pass those costs on to consumers.

It simply was not true. In anticipation of having to comply with Vermont's law (before Congress preempted it), numerous companies, including Campbell's, began printing the words "produced with genetic engineering" on product labels—and they did so at no extra cost to consumers.

Most of the corporations that opposed GMO labeling laws are members of the Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA)—Monsanto’s Evil Twin. The GMA broke campaign finance laws in order to defeat GMO labeling initiativessued Vermont to overturn its GMO labeling law, and wrote the bill that ultimately preempted Vermont's law.

The Organic Consumers Association has called on its networks to boycott the GMA, and all of its member companies.

Here is a list of the companies that have funded the fight against mandatory GMO Labeling:
