The market basket turns greener every year, with chains such as Wal-Mart and Chipotle touting organic or natural products and American shoppers spending more than $51 billion on natural and organic products in 2005. The Natural Foods Merchandiser trade magazine also notes that organic food sales grew 15.7 percent, with organic fresh meat among the fastest-growing categories. Shoppers who choose meat with the USDA Certified Organic label are guaranteed that U.S. Department of Agriculture standards have been met: primarily no trace of antibiotics, chemicals or pesticides.

The freshly-picked strawberries at the WSU organic farm aren't as large as the ones typically sold at the grocery store, but they are redder, sweeter and grown without the use of pesticides.
"If it's seasonal, if it's local, then it's going to taste better," WSU student Julie Sullivan said as she laid out irrigation tubes in the organic farm fields.

ST. LOUIS (AP) – When Monsanto Co. developed its newest strain of engineered soybeans, the company didn't use gene splicing. It used math.
Monsanto has touted the Vistive soybean as a scientific breakthrough because it is ready-made for processing into healthier food oils that are low in trans fats.
But the secret recipe behind Vistive doesn't include genetic material from bacteria or other organisms that Monsanto uses to develop plants that grow pesticide among other traits.

Every time the media - or a Democrat - uses the phrase "War in Iraq" they are promoting one of Karl Rove's most potent Republican Party frames. There is no longer a war against Iraq.
It ended in May of 2003, when George W. Bush stood below a "Mission Accomplished" sign aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln and correctly declared that we had "victoriously" defeated the Iraqi army and overthrown their government.

TROY, Vermont - For the first time in decades, dairy farmer Dexter Randall could pay all his bills on time.
Wooed by signing bonuses and the prospect of doubling his earnings, the burly 60-year-old switched to organic milk over the past year. He says it is the only way to save his farm and his family's future -- all of it invested in 460 acres in the shadow of Jay Peak mountain.
Tina Durrance greeted a cow at the New Venture Farm. (Wendy Maeda/ Globe Staff) "With conventional milk, there was no light at the end of the tunnel," Randall said. "Now, I have true hope."

This week, the Senate Appropriations committee will work on the 2007 budget for the U.S. Department of Agriculture. They are starting with the budget bill that already passed the House earlier this spring. The bill contains a key provision that prohibits the USDA from allowing the import of poultry products processed in the People's Republic of China.
Please call 202-224-3121 or email your Senators today on this committee to urge them to keep this provision of the House bill that would stop USDA from allowing the import of processed poultry from China.
Why?

A year ago, my colleagues on the Board of Supervisors and I appointed a subcommittee to advise us on the subject of genetically engineered (GE) food crops in Santa Cruz County.
I brought the item to the Board for several reasons: This is an important issue made difficult by a lack of reliable data and the absence of a serious and informed discussion. I felt that the Board, myself included, could benefit from education on this complicated, technical and controversial issue which is being raised in Santa Cruz County, as well as other parts of the state and nation.

Momentous change is approaching in American politics. Conceivably, the turning point has already arrived, too indistinct to recognize. We are witnessing the demise of the reigning economic ideology. A deep shift of this kind is a very rare event, one that comes along only every thirty or forty years. Economic disorders accumulate that the orthodoxy cannot answer and may even have caused. Eventually, the ideological presumptions are discredited by real-world contradictions.

On Saturday, The Wall Street Journal editorial board opined that, "'Be like Brazil' have never been words to live by except perhaps in soccer or samba. But suddenly Americans are being told we should imitate Brazil in its expensive devotion to driving cars that run on ethanol. VeraSun Energy, the second-largest U.S. ethanol producer, was the talk of Wall Street this week with its IPO. Wal-Mart wants to install pumps to cater to cars that run on a largely ethanol blend. Even Rudy Giuliani was plumping for the stuff this week, a sign that an Iowa campaign stop may be in his future.
