7UP to lose '100% Natural' label

Cadbury Schweppes Americas Beverages (CSAB) said Friday that the company will strike the phrase "100% Natural" on regular 7UP products from new labeling.

"The new label will go beyond applicable regulations and move from saying "100% Natural" to specifically highlighting those 7UP natural ingredients, for which there is no debate," Cadbury said in a statement.

In May 2005, the Center for Science in the Public Interest (C.S.P.I.) threatened to sue Cadbury Schweppes Americas over its '100% Natural' claim. The consumer group based its argument on the fact regular 7UP contains high-fructose corn syrup.

Earlier this week, giant Kraft Foods Inc. said it was removing the "all natural" claim from its regular Capri Sun line after it received notice of being sued by CSPI for making the same claim.

Dallas-based Cadbury Schweppes Americas Beverages introduced the reformulated 7UP last spring. The company said the product was developed following Food and Drug Administration (FDA) written policy on natural products and ingredients.

"We know many consumers are interested in a wide variety of natural products and ingredients, but also that many, varied opinions on labeling of all natural products exist," Cadbury said in a statement.
