We may have lost the battle to label GMO foods in the U.S., but the Canadian parliament hasn’t yet sold out to Monsanto and Big Food.

On May 5, the House of Commons will debate Bill C-291, a bill that would require labels on foods that contain genetically modified organisms.

Last year, the U.S. Congress passed the DARK (Deny Americans the Right to Know) Act, a voluntary labeling bill that isn’t even likely to get implemented under the Trump Administration. Passage of the DARK Act effectively ended the GMO labeling debate in the U.S., and ensured that American consumers will remain in the dark about what’s in their food.

But in Canada, the public debate on GMO labeling isn’t over.

Polls show that 80 percent of Canadians want labels on foods containing GMOs. It’s time for your elected Members of Parliament to stand up for your right to know what’s in your food.

On March 10, the House of Commons held its first debate on Private Members Bill C-291. The second debate is scheduled for May 5, followed by a vote a few days later.

We’re watching this bill in the U.S. too. A GMO labeling win in Canada would certainly send a message to the U.S. Congress.
