Civil liberties are the fundamental freedoms to which all people are entitled as inalienable rights. In the United States many of them are codified in the Bill of Rights. Since 9/11, governments around the world have passed many new laws to restrict our civil liberties, ostensibly in the name of "national security." Reliable, verifiable information like that given below is a basis on which we can preserve these civil liberties.
Fourteen citizens took an hour of public comment to express their concerns about the new development at Sixth & Wakarusa Drive. The majority of the night's concerns were about increased traffic, loss of local business and the overall benefit to Lawrence residents.
In response to mounting ecological crises, the United States is going through its most important economic transformation since the New Deal. Unfortunately, the vital process of change along more eco-friendly lines is moving ahead with practically zero participation from people of color.
To satisfy an emerging weight-conscious customer base, Starbucks recently came up with a line of "light" drinks, which, unfortunately, are still heavy by most standards. According to The Sentinel, their Caramel Frappuccino Light has 310 calories - hardly an improvement over the 350-calorie regular version. At this rate, customers are still better off with a 200-calorie Coke. Besides, there is little sense in coming up with a light drink and then topping it with full-fat whipped cream.
