LUCEDALE, MS (WLOX) – An exotic breed of pig is being raised on a farm on George County. The red wattle is the star attraction on Sand Ridge Farm near Lucedale.

Dale Stevens began raising these unique hogs in South Mississippi after doing some research and finding out the breed is known for its lean and flavorful meat. The red wattle is being rediscovered by hog farmers after the breed nearly disappeared.

“The red wattle hog pretty much became extinct. A few farmers in Texas found some and starting breeding them. They’re making a comeback,” said Stevens.

Stevens had to travel long distances to buy his breeding stock and now all the pigs are born and raised right here. The Sand Ridge Farm uses only natural feed.

“All these pigs get is acorns out of the woods, worms and grubs from the dirt and a special grass. We supplement them with all natural, GMO free feed, Stevens said.

You can find Sand Ridge Farm pork at the Gulfport farmer’s market. Dale Stevens is going to start going to farmer’s markets in Ocean Springs and Lucedale. Chefs are very interested in this super lean pork.
