Dear friends,
Civil liberties are the fundamental freedoms to which all people are entitled as inalienable rights. In the United States many of them are codified in the Bill of Rights. Since 9/11, governments around the world have passed many new laws to restrict our civil liberties, ostensibly in the name of "national security." Reliable, verifiable information like that given below is a basis on which we can preserve these civil liberties.

The five-year battle for a second Lawrence Wal-Mart is finally over. Despite a large group of Wal-Mart-bashing protestors, the Lawrence City Commission approved the plan with a 4-1 vote on August 7.
Fourteen citizens took an hour of public comment to express their concerns about the new development at Sixth & Wakarusa Drive. The majority of the night's concerns were about increased traffic, loss of local business and the overall benefit to Lawrence residents.

To put it bluntly, people of color have much more directly at stake in the greening of America than white college students do.
In response to mounting ecological crises, the United States is going through its most important economic transformation since the New Deal. Unfortunately, the vital process of change along more eco-friendly lines is moving ahead with practically zero participation from people of color.

Not-so-light drinks
To satisfy an emerging weight-conscious customer base, Starbucks recently came up with a line of "light" drinks, which, unfortunately, are still heavy by most standards. According to The Sentinel, their Caramel Frappuccino Light has 310 calories - hardly an improvement over the 350-calorie regular version. At this rate, customers are still better off with a 200-calorie Coke. Besides, there is little sense in coming up with a light drink and then topping it with full-fat whipped cream.

Some call Starbucks a channel for industrial revolution; others say it is the epitome of corporate imperialism. Others blame it for America's obesity crisis. But for most of the 34 million people who visit their cafés every week, Starbucks simply serves good, convenient, and by most standards, overpriced coffee.
