In just eight years, Robert Sinskey's vineyards grew from 15 to 100 acres. But the expansion masked a problem: Sinskey's vineyards were in decline. The fruit just wasn't ripening, and he suspected it was related to the soil, which looked fractured and bare. "We felt something had to be wrong with the basic practices of modern farming," he says.

Food plays an important role in the curriculum at our school, an alternative public elementary school in Olympia, Wash., which enrolls just under 300 students. We have a large organic garden and greenhouse, and during the school year, our students dig, plant, weed, water, compost, harvest, and cook fresh produce. All classrooms use the garden to help teach measuring, graphing, and weighing. And we all work together to plan and prepare for a yearly harvest festival.

Fired Charles Krug-Mondavi workers are calling for a nationwide boycott of all Charles Krug and C.K. Mondavi wine labels. The contract between the United Farm Workers and Charles Krug-Mondavi expired and the company has refused to return to the bargaining table to re-negotiate an agreement.

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has become the latest religious group to call on McDonald's to push for its tomato suppliers to pay higher wages.
With most of McDonald's U.S. tomatoes coming from Florida, the bishops want the firm to broker a deal between the state's growers and main pickers union.

The Fair Trade Initiative at St. Joseph's University in
Philadelphia will be putting on a Fair Trade Market again this year.
The Market will take place on November 14, from 11-1. Last year,
approximately 12 vendors came and attracted anywhere from 300 to 400
students over the course of the event. Some vendors sold products,
while some took the opportunity to educate the students on their
particular issues.
