La Semilla is a nonprofit organization that was started in 2010, with a goal of educating community members, on how to grow their own food.

Volunteers teach kids where their food comes from and how to grow it in a sustainable way.

They grow a variety of fruits and vegetables and often visit schools such as Gadsden Elementary in Anthony, New Mexico.

The students showed off the foods they have grown with La Semilla, such as, beets, squash, carrots, kale, and even garlic.

“I think it’s important for communities to be connected to where their food comes from and the people that are growing that food and the challenges they face and finding ways collectively to support that,” Farm Director, Christina Dominguez-Eshelman said.

La Semilla practices organic methods when growing its food.

Volunteers and community members are rooted to the success behind La Semilla.

They continue to establish local support from founders and community members.

Since 2010, they’ve acquired 14 acres, donated by Sierra Vista Growers.

This season, they’ve harvested fresh carrots that will soon be available at Food City groceries in El Paso, Texas.

The food grown at La Semilla farms will also go back to the community to be sold at local farmers’ markets in El Paso and Cruces, New Mexico.
