The first trial addressing the carcinogenic properties of Monsanto’s Roundup® weed killer will begin June 18, 2018, in the Superior Court for the County of San Francisco. The plaintiff in this trial is DeWayne Johnson, a former groundskeeper for the Benicia Unified School District. As of 2014, Mr. Johnson’s job had already entailed the mixing and spraying of hundreds of gallons of Monsanto’s glyphosate-containing products onto school properties for several years. He began to experience a severe skin irritation and rash over the summer, which he reported to his health care providers. Medical notes from this era show the condition seemed to worsen with exposure to Monsanto’s RangerPro®. His health care providers explored Monsanto’s Material Safety Data Sheet for the product online, which did not mention any type of cancer risk.

Sadly, in August of 2014, Mr. Johnson was diagnosed with epidermotropic T-cell lymphoma. His work still required him to apply and be in close contact with glyphosate products. He suffered an extensive dermal exposure to the chemicals in Jan. 2015. Though Mr. Johnson underwent chemotherapy throughout the year, his disease progressed and in September, a biopsy revealed mycosis fungoides, which is a non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, with large cell transformation – a major and devastating advancement of his illness.
