EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ — East Brunswick’s Chairperson of the Environmental Commission Theresa Lam wants you to know about an important event that touches the lives of farmers, scientists, gardeners, environmentalists, and foodies in town.  Over 50 workshops on food, farming and gardening will be offered at the Northeast Organic Farming Association of New Jersey (NOFA-NJ) Winter Conference at Brookdale Community College, Lincroft, NJ. The sessions run from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm on January 30 and 31 and will include five tracks: Beginning Farmer, Advanced Farmer, Gardening, Food & Nutrition and Homesteading & Livestock. Anyone interested in learning about local organic and sustainable food, nutrition and related policy are invited to attend.

Theresa Lam says, “The program is good for everyone interested in local, organic, sustainable food, not just farmers.  It’s wonderful to come and start building a community around our local food system.  It’s an opportunity to be with like-minded people who care about the environment, too.”

Lam continued by supporting the master Gardeners track, one of the many selections available for participation at the conference.  Run by the Cooperative Extension of Middlesex County, the Master Gardeners’ program provides lots of information, classes, and support for local homeowners.  “At the conference, ” Lam says, ” there is a wonderful environment” among the people who share common interests.

Homesteading” is one element of the program that may interest both landowners of large and small properties locally in East Brunswick, noted Lam. Homesteading is a lifestyle of self-sufficiency. It is characterized by subsistence agriculture, home preservation of foodstuffs, and it may or may not also involve the small-scale production of textiles, clothing, and craftwork for household use or sale. (wikipedia) “Some residents of East Brunswick are interested in canning, preserving, and even raising chickens and beekeeping,” says Lam.
