Proposed Bill in Argentina Would Restrict Spraying of Glyphosate
Aerial spraying and ground spraying close to houses targeted
In Cordoba province, Argentina, a proposed bill would implement stricter requirements on spraying of glyphosate and other pesticides. The move comes in the wake of the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) re-classification of glyphosate herbicide and the insecticides malathion and diazinon as probable carcinogens. The bill is proposed by the Cordoba legislator Santiago Clavijo, from the Frente Civico political group.

In Cordoba province, Argentina, a proposed bill would implement stricter requirements on spraying of glyphosate and other pesticides. The move comes in the wake of the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) re-classification of glyphosate herbicide and the insecticides malathion and diazinon as probable carcinogens.
The bill is proposed by the Cordoba legislator Santiago Clavijo, from the Frente Civico political group. The bill aims to prohibit the aerial spraying of glyphosate herbicides as well as malathion, diazinon, tetrachlorvinphos and parathion. It also proposes that ground application of these products should be forbidden under 1500 metres from urban areas, rivers, and reservoirs. Current provincial law allows aerial spraying of glyphosate herbicides up to 500 metres from urban areas.
Clavijo is also promoting in Congress the re-classification of the pesticides by the Argentine food safety agency SENASA, to take into consideration the verdict of the WHO.
