Local activists gathered outside a Ben & Jerry’s ice cream shop in Uptown Minneapolis on Thursday to protest the reported inclusion of weedkiller in the company’s ice cream.
A recent New York Times report has claimed 10 out of 11 samples of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream tested positive for glyphosate, the key ingredient in Monsanto’s Roundup herbicide.
Activists – some dressed in hazmat suits, others carrying posters with phrases such as “Stop selling Roundup ready ice cream – purchased ice cream cones and proceeded to dump the ice cream into a bucket labeled “Caution: Hazardous Waste” outside the store.
Similar protests took place in Austin, Texas; Burlington, Vermont; Los Angeles; Glenview, Illinois; New York; and Washington, DC.
