The National Association of Wheat Growers (NAWG) is hoping to introduce GM within the next decade. Claiming that GM soy and corn have taken acres from wheat growers, NAWG is meeting with millers, bakers, wheat users and growers, industry members and consumers, about new wheat crops being developed for both GM and non- GMO production.

The wheat industry expects to develop new non-transgenic, high-yield varieties in the next 5- 7 years; it hopes to commercialize GM wheat in 7-10 years.

Although Monsanto attempted to introduce Roundup Ready GM wheat in 2003, it dropped the project due to overwhelming resistance from US buying markets in Europe and Asia.

Aware of opposition to GMOs, NAWG is trying to solicit favor for the crop without stirring controversy.
