Washington organic farmers get a chance to scope out Washington State University’s organic farm in its new location.

The farm hosts a field day 8 a.m. July 30 on the WSU campus in Pullman, Wash.

“This is the first year that we’ve completely transitioned to the new site,” said Bradley Jaeckel, organic farm manager. “We’re really excited to show off the first 10 acres that we’ve certified organic.”

The university first announced in 2012 the move from Tukey Orchard, where the organic farm was 4 acres, to the new Eggert Family Organic Farm, a 30-acre model farm.

The tour includes a completely-planted orchard, two fields of vegetables, specialty crops in hoophouses and the new harvest shed, the first new building on the site. A greenhouse is next on Jaeckel’s agenda. He’d like to have one within the next few years.

Other items on the field day agenda include orchard development, root stock and cultivars and millet and oca, a tuber grown in South America.

“Just to see this farm coming from the planning stages to actuality to reality has been the most exciting part of the year for us,” Jaeckel said. “It’s a very diverse farm, there’s a lot going on.”
