Denmark Pushes for Total Ban
on Antibiotics in Animal Feed

Denmark officials pledge to push EU antibiotic ban

Officials from Denmark told European Union farm ministers last
week they plan to use their six-month term in the rotating EU presidency
starting in July to push ahead with a proposal to phase out all remaining
growth-promoting antibiotics used by European livestock producers.

The regulation would end the use, by Jan. 1, 2006, of
lavophospholipol, salinomycin sodium, avilamycin and monensin sodium
currently used in the European livestock industry to promote animal growth.
The growth-promoting use of other antibiotics also used in human medicine
(avoparcin, bacitracin zinc, spiramycin, virginiamycin and tylosin
phosphate) was previously banned. The regulations also revamp approvals on
other feed additives.

"The Danish delegation stressed that the proposal would be a priority for
its upcoming presidency," the European Commission said in a statement issued
following the farm ministers' meeting April 22-23 in

The EU initiative in part springs from concern within the scientific
community that routine use of antibiotics in agriculture may be reducing the
effectiveness of these drugs in human medicine. This concern gained some
support this week in a study published in the U.S. in the Proceedings of the
National Academy of Sciences.

"Animal antibiotic use has an early but important impact on the emergence of
antibiotic resistance," Dr. David L. Smith from the University of Maryland
and his fellow researchers wrote in the April 30 issue of Proceedings.
"Regulating early agricultural antibiotic use would likely extend the period
that a drug can be used effectively in humans and reduce
the demands for new antibiotics."...
