Exposed: Why You Should Boycott Farmed Salmon

British Columbia’s pacific salmon, considered an essential species for the ecosystem, have been disappearing since the early 1990s. Biologist Alex Morton, who has followed and studied the decline for nearly 30 years, knows who’s to blame: fish farms. It seems that when commercial fish farms moved into the area, the wild salmon became infected with a number of life-threatening conditions, including parasitic sea lice, the highly lethal “salmon influenza” and other viruses.

The Canadian government is covering up Morton’s research and trying to silence her.

Today, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) is set to approve the first genetically engineered salmon for sale in the U.S. Over the objections of more than 40 members of Congress and half a million U.S. consumers, the FDA says the GE salmon poses no threat to the environment, because the fish will never escape their “farms.”

Frankenfish Could Be Approved Today!

DEADLINE TODAY: Tell the FDA to Reject Frankenfish!
Flawed studies. Opposition from more than 40 members of Congress. More than half a million public comments from outraged citizens. Still, the FDA today could approve the first genetically engineered animal destined for our dinner plates, a salmon now widely referred to as “Frankenfish.”

Scientists say Frankenfish hasn’t been adequately tested for human health or environmental safety. AquaBounty, creator of the AquAdvantage GE salmon, claims that the company’s process for raising GE fish is safer than traditional aquaculture. Yet documents released by the Canadian government show that a new strain of Infectious Salmon Anemia (ISA), the deadly “flu” that has been devastating fish stocks around the world, contaminated the company’s Prince Edward Island facility in 2009. As a result, AquaBounty lost its “fish health” certificate, and was barred from exporting fish until the certificate was reinstated in November 2011. Conveniently, this information was missing from the U.S. Food & Drug Administration’s environmental assessment, released in December 2012.

TAKE ACTION: Boycott the Traitor Brands!
They sat idly by while their parent companies poured millions into defeating Proposition 37, the California Right to Know GMO Labeling initiative. Now, if they want our business, it’s time for the “Traitor Brands” to pony up financial support for I-522, a similar labeling initiative that will be on the ballot in November, in Washington State.

Thanks to all of you who boycotted the brands, wrote to the companies, and caused a ruckus on their Facebook pages, Big Food has taken note. Rumor has it that the parent companies, including Pepsi, Coca-Cola, Unilver, General Mills and others, have broken off from Monsanto and won’t be dumping their profits into trying to defeat any more labeling initiatives. That’s progress, but it’s not enough. If brands like Naked Juice, Odwalla, Kashi, Knudsen, Ben & Jerry’s and others want us back, they need to show us the money. Starting in Washington State. Today. Until they do, let’s keep the pressure on!

Fractured Farms + Fried Planet = No Food

TAKE ACTION: Tell the Bureau of Land Management: Don’t Frack our Food and Farms!

Fracking and farming don’t mix. Farmers in Pennsylvania, Ohio, North Dakota, West Virginia, Colorado and other states have lost soil quality, farm animals and their own health, thanks to contaminated water and air caused by the fracking of nearby land. If that weren’t bad enough, hydraulic fracturing, or “fracking,” has become the second largest contributor of greenhouse gases in the U.S.

Now, the U.S. government is poised to auction off even more of California’s fertile farmlands to the oil and gas industry. This despite a federal judge’s ruling that says the U.S. Department of Interior’s Bureau of Land Management (BLM) violated environmental law when it previously auctioned off 1,750 square miles of California’s public lands to oil companies.

Glyphosate (Roundup): Most Biologically Disruptive Chemical in Our Environment?

Monsanto wants you to believe that glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup®, is only “minimally toxic” to humans, whatever that means. But the most recent study on the most widely used herbicide in the world says, once again, otherwise. According to the report: Glyphosate residues found in the main foods of the Western diet – sugar, wheat, and genetically modified corn and soy – inhibit critical enzymes in mammals. Its negative impact on the body is “insidious and manifests slowly over time, as inflammation damages cellular systems throughout the body.”

Hi, I am Marjory Wildcraft.  About a decade ago I volunteered to help get fresh, local, organic  produce into the kids school system.  That project failed miserably, and changed my life forever.  Why?  Because there wasn't enough locally grown food in the entire county for even one small elementary school.  I am willing to bet there isn't much food growing in your county either. 

Once I stopped shaking, I devoted my life to finding the fastest, easiest, and funnest ways for an individual or family to grow thier own food.  I discovered that growing your own is incredibly rewarding.

I've developed a video set that is used by permacuulture teachers, universities, missionary organizations, and regular folks.  It gets you started producing very quickly.  You know from reading these OCA newsletters that the era of quality food is way back in your rearview mirror.  And the era of cheap food is the dead end right in front of you.  Fortunately, if you've got a hose and a backyard, or even a sunny window sill, there is a tremenous amount you can do - and it is really fun!
