Tell the FDA what you think about their policy on genetically engineered foods.

On October 25, 1999, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that
they will be holding public hearings (in Oakland, Chicago, and Washington)
and accepting written comments concerning the government's genetically
engineered food policy.
Please attend the public hearing and/or rally in Oakland on December 13,
1999 and send letters to the FDA by January 13, 2000.
Currently, 44 different genetically engineered (GE) foods are being sold
without mandatory labeling or long-term safety testing. There are
numerous health concerns about genetically engineered foods including:

* They may create new toxins or allergens or "enhance" existing toxins.

* Genes for antibiotic resistance are routinely placed in GE crops;
this may accelerate development of resistant bacteria, placing us all at

* Individuals with ethical or religious dietary concerns may be
unknowingly consuming foods that contain genes from other species.

Here's how you can get involved !

Come to the public rally (starts at noon) and show your concern. Register
to attend or speak at the public meeting in Oakland by filling out the
information on the back of this flyer and sending it in no later than
Friday, November 26. Don't forget to send in your written comments by
January 13, 2000. You can e-mail them through the web page below, or send
them to the address on the back.

Meeting Time: 9 am to 6 pm (an FDA invited panel will speak in the
morning and presentations by the public will be given in the afternoon.)
How to Attend: Everyone who wishes to attend must register 15 days before
the meeting (see form below to register).
