Seeds of Deception--A Great New Book on the Dangers of GMOs

New exposé on GM foods is best book on the topic, "essential reading."

Seeds of Deception: Exposing Industry and Government Lies about the Safety of the Genetically Engineered Foods You're Eating, by Jeffrey M. Smith

"Seeds of Deception delivers!" That was the comment by one excited reader whose relaxed attitude about genetically modified (GM) foods was completely turned on its head after she read about their serious health dangers and the outrageous efforts by industry and government to hide the evidence. Her response to this blockbuster exposé is typical, and many are hoping that this compelling book will become the Silent Spring of GM foods.

Hunter Lovins, coauthor of Natural Capitalism, says, "This powerful exposé could spark the revolution that this topic deserves." Andrew Kimbrell, director of the Center for Food Safety, says, "The revelations in this book are being made public at a pivotal time in the global GM debate, and could tip the scales against the biotech industry." And in her foreword for Seeds of Deception, Frances Moore Lappé writes, "Jeffrey Smith has written a powerful, desperately needed book. My fervent hope is that in the years ahead we will look back and see his seminal work as a none-too-soon alarm."

John Robbins, author of The Food Revolution, describes Seeds of Deception as, "Clear, profound, and unerringly accurate." He says, "If you care about the safety of our food supply, if you care about the future of life on this dear planet, if you care what corporations are doing to your food and health, this is the book to get." OCA director Ronnie Cummins, who describes Seeds of Deception as the best book written on the subject, says it is "is essential reading for food activists and concerned consumers." Mad Cowboy author Howard Lyman, says it's a "must read" that "could save your life."

Part of the book's power is that chapters read like adventure stories. Scientists were threatened. Evidence was stolen. Data was omitted or distorted. Government employees who complained were harassed, stripped of responsibilities, or fired. Bob Roth, author of A Reason to Vote, says, "Jeffrey's writing is a masterful blend of stories you can't put down and documented evidence of outrageous injustice. I love this book." Against the Grain author Marc Lappé says this "is the first book to make a convincing case for the existence of a genuine conspiracy on the part of the biotechnology industry to suppress free speech, debate and even scientific dialogue about the safety and value of GMOs." Ben Cohen of Ben and Jerry's wrote, "Outrageous! That's what you'll say over and over again when you read how the biotechnology companies have manipulated the government, our food, and the media, and put an entire generation at risk." James Turner, author of The Chemical Feast says "Smith presents a roadmap of insensitivity by America's food giants and a blueprint of action to stop them from wreaking further havoc. Every American should read this book."

Woven through the stories is the most complete, easy-to-understand, and compelling descriptions of the technology and its dangers. Arpad Pusztai, a leading expert on GM food research, says, "A particular strength of the book-and this will be hated by the pro-GM lobby-is that it uses a very colorful but easily understandable language to describe what is usually regarded as 'high' science. My greatest compliment is that even though I am a scientist I got some special insights into the workings of the recombinant DNA technology from Jeffrey Smith's enjoyable presentation."

Seeds of Deception also documents the elaborate methods by which industry studies are rigged. With rbGH, for example, researchers injected cows with only one forty-seventh the normal dosage before reporting hormone residues in milk. They heated the milk 120 times longer than standard, to report that pasteurization destroys the hormone. They added cows to their study that were pregnant before treatment, to claim that rbGH didn't impede fertility. Cows that fell sick were dropped from studies altogether. Similarly, nutritional differences between GM and natural soy varieties were omitted from a published paper. Feeding studies diluted GM soy by 10 to 1, and tests on GM corn used 1,250 times the amount of a digestive enzyme recommended by international standards.
By the end of the book, Smith shows readers how to avoid GM foods, and lays out a simple, but powerful strategy that could topple the biotech food industry.
