Brazil Ag Minister Having Second Thoughts on Frankencrops

BRASILIA, 8/8/01

Agriculture Minister Marcus Vinicius Pratini de Moraes showed caution in his
declarations on transgenic soy growing. Contrary to some weeks before, when
he said soy growing would be authorized, the minister today said he had
changed his mind.

He said the Agriculture Ministry will await judicial proceedings before
making a decision about resolving the question. Pratini de Moraes said the
ministry may go ahead and register areas of planting, but that it was
necessary to wait for technical feedback from the National Commission of
Biosecurity (CTN-Bio), an organ connected to the Ministry of Science and
