OCA, Greenpeace, & Others Will Label GE Foods in Oct. 30 Protest

October 30th 2001 - First national day of GE food labelling -

The Citizens Voluntary Labelling Brigade needs you!

also announcing www.labelthis.org

You know you don't want to eat genetically engineered

You know that over 70% of processed foods are made
with genetically engineered ingredients....

You know that in North America these genetically
engineered foods are not even labelled, let alone safety
tested or publically approved...

You know that its time for citizens to take action.

On 30th October 2001 active citizens, consumer groups,
subvertisers and environmentally conscious shoppers
will be joining together to expose this genetic
experiment with our food - equipped with our own labels.

In at least 32 countries laws are being enacted which
require the mandatory labelling of genetically
engineered food. In other countries selling GE food is
simply illegal. (*see below)

Even though over 93% of the public in USa and Canada
support similar mandatory labelling the government has
only proposed a 'voluntary labelling' standard - well, now
its time to volunteer: If the government won't label these
risky products then we will voluntarily label GE food

>>> Choose the 30th October as a day for taking action
for labelling of genetically engineered food. Gather your
friends and family and think how you can use that day to
inform grocery shoppers about GE food:

You could:
* take peaceful direct action to label products,
* table at a supermarket
* lobby your representative..

>>> Check out the new website:
- it will contain information, downloadable stickers and
detailed practical advice on how to take peaceful action
for labelling genetically engineered foods.

>>> Contact Jim on 1 415 255 9221 ext 316 or email
info@labelthis.org to let us know your plans for Oct 30th
so we can help you tell the world... Protests are already
planned in major cities across the USA.

The first national day of GE food labelling is being
endorsed by the GE-Free Market coalition which
includes New England Safe Foods Campaign, Free the
Planet, GEAN, Genewise, GE-Free LA, Greenpeace,
NERAGE, NW RAGE, NY Greens and The Organic
Consumers Association as well as by The Oregon
Initiative for GE Food Labelling and others.

* The following countries are already enacting laws
requiring the mandatory labelling of GE foods:
Australia, Austria, Belgium, China, Czech Republic,
Denmark, France, Finland, Greece, Germany, Hong
Kong, Indonesia, Israel, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Republic of
Korea, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, New Zealand,
Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Saudi
Arabia, South Africa, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden,
Switzerland, Thailand, Taiwan, United Kingdom,
Yugoslavia. It is currently illegal to sell GE food in either
Algeria, Brazil or India.
Private bills for mandatory labelling of GE food are also
being introduced or have been introduced in USA,
Canada, Mexico, and the Philippines.

“If you put a label on a genetically engineered food, you
might as well put a skull and crossbones on it.” –
Norman Braksick, the president of Asgrow
