Oregon GE Labeling Initiative
Generating Media

Report by Jeff Peckman <biglions@kdsi.net>
July 4, 2002

Thrilling news from Oregon! 94,700 signatures have been collected and more
are coming in daily. The last signatures will be turned in at the media
event on the Capitol steps July 5 at 1:00pm.

Associated Press/Statesman Journal/The Oregonian/Portland Tribune/OPB Radio
have all confirmed their attendance at the event. The organizers are still
working on the television stations. The guest speakers are Harry MacCormack
and Elaine Higham who was the researcher at Oregon State University when
they discovered the gmo microorganism that would have destroyed the soil.

Following is a summary of comments by Donna Harris in a phone call this

1. The final total will be around 97,000.

2. The Secretary of State said that the phone has been ringing off the hook
from people, both opposition and supporters, wanting to know if the
signatures have been turned in. This situation seems to be unique for the
labeling initiative compared to the other initiatives.

3. In previous campaigns Donna would have to call reporters and ask them to
come and get mediocre responses and rejections. Now the reporters, including
Associated Press are calling Donna from their side.

4. Usually there are 18-25 ballot initiatives filed in Oregon. This year
there is only 10-11 being filed and several probably won't make it.

5. The GE food labeling initiative is shaping up to be THE initiative for
Oregon this year. That means a lot of people watching, a lot of media
covering it and a lot at stake.

6. Donna was interviewed by one radio station yesterday and several
newspapers the day before that.

7. More organizations are getting on board now.
