Consumer, Environmental, Animal Welfare and Other Groups Announce Formation of New Food Safety Coalition

For Immediate Release:

April 24, 2001

(Washington, DC) More than a dozen consumer, faith-based, farm, animal welfare, labor, and environmental groups [including Organic Consumers Association] held a news conference today to announce the formation of a new coalition that will focus on food safety, particularly meat production. The Global Safe Food Alliance put the food industry and federal government on notice that they must do more than produce a healthy bottom line; they must produce a healthy, wholesome and safe food supply.

"The Global Safe Food Alliance is a coalition of prominent advocacy groups dedicated to sustainable agriculture and the production of safe food, and to mobilizing grassroots opposition to the escalating hazards of factory farming," said Dr. Samuel Epstein, MD, chairman of the Cancer Prevention Coalition.

Groups in the Alliance include the Animal Welfare Institute, Cancer Prevention Coalition, Community Nutrition Institute, Family Farm Defenders, Farm Sanctuary, Global Resource Action Center for the Environment, Government Accountability Project, Humane Farming Association, Humane Society of the United States, Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy, National Catholic Rural Life Conference, National Joint Council of Food Inspection Locals, Organic Consumers Association, Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, Public Citizen, United Poultry Concerns, and the Western Organization of Resource Councils. The coalition's mission is to mobilize a large, broad-based grassroots movement to advocate for a food supply that is safe, wholesome and humanely produced in a sustainable manner that benefits consumers, workers, farmers, animals and the environment.

"Our strength is in our diversity. Each member of the coalition brings a unique perspective on the corporate control and globalization of our food supply," said Wenonah Hauter, director of Public Citizen's Critical Mass Energy and the Environment Program. "With the globalization of our food supply, the huge multinational food corporations have gone too far. They have broken faith with the American people. Our coalition will restore that faith by demanding protections for workers, animals, the environment and public health."

"We look forward to working with this broad range of groups to call for state of the art job protections for all corporate and government whistleblowers," said Felicia Nestor, Food Safety program director for the Government Accountability Project. "We will monitor the production of food from the farm to the table and hold the industry and the government accountable for any unsafe food practices."

Brother David Andrews, CSC, executive director of the National Catholic Rural Life Conference explains that his organization joined the Alliance because "We are concerned that the food cartel culture and industrialization of agriculture is diminishing the dignity of God's creation. As expressed in our 'Eating is a Moral Act' campaign, we believe all 'eaters' have a right to nutritious and safe food that has been produced in an agricultural system that is sustainable, regenerative, and that does not disregard human dignity nor foster disrespect for God's creation. This new alliance is working toward that end."
