EU scientists release new guidelines on BSE

The European Union's Scientific Steering Committee Wednesday released new guidelines for the use of tallow, fats and gelatin derived from livestock in a bid to avoid the spread of bovine spongiform encephalopathy, or mad cow disease.

The committee said that while tallow a rendered fat which can be used in certain types of cattle feed derived from standard meat fat is safe, tallow produced from other cattle tissues needs to undergo treatment, including filtration to eliminate any tissue at risk of harboring BSE.

The EU scientists also said parts of fats that are directly associated with the intestines of cattle should be considered as potentially dangerous

The EU scientists also said that they have approved two new processes for the production of gelatin applying strict guidelines to minimize BSE risk. Gelatin is widely used in food, animal feed, pharmaceutical and beauty products.

In addition, the committee also said a risk assessment study shows it is unlikely cattle herds in Panama and El Salvador are infected with BSE, while it is unlikely, but not excluded that such a risk exists in Nigerian cattle.

The EU scientists have carried out similar assessments on a number of countries to discover the likelihood of BSE outbreaks.

The committee also outlined the risk assessment required when and where genetically-modified cotton is used in medical and hygiene products.

It said that while they see no ''reasons for additional risk'' when medical and hygiene products are made of GM-cotton, detailed risk assessments should be carried out on a case-by-case basis.
