ALERT: Stop Congress From Attacking the National Organic Food Program!

**THIS ACTION ALERT EXPIRES AT MIDNIGHT ON 02/13/2003

Please forgive the short notice, but we must act on this urgent issue today!!

Help preserve the integrity of Organic Standards.

Posted 02/12/2003

There is an effort on behalf of the GEORGIA HOUSE DELEGATION to once again push through an exemption to the 100% ORGANIC FEED REQUIREMENT FOR LIVESTOCK. This means that organic livestock can be fed conventional feed!!!

No matter where you live please:

1. Call Representative Dennis Hastert: 202-225-2976. Tell him to take the language giving an exemption to the 100% organic feed requirement out of the Appropriations bill. This will be destructive to organic consumers, farmers and the organic industry everywhere.

2. Call Senator Thad Cochran: 202-224-5054. Tell him to please not allow this language through the Conference Committee. Tell him to stand firm and protect organic farmers, consumers, and the entire organic industry.

3. Call Senator Ted Stevens (202-224-3004)

and CALL YOUR Senator or Representative immediately* - and tell them to:

** OPPOSE ANY ATTEMPT TO USE THE APPROPRIATIONS OMNIBUS BILL TO WEAKEN ORGANIC STANDARDS

** OPPOSE ANY AND ALL EXEMPTIONS FROM THE 100% ORGANIC FEED REQUIREMENT FOR ORGANIC LIVESTOCK --

* No need to call the following members -- they are on board, and working hard on this issue: Leahy (VT) Walsh (NY) Feinstein (CA) Farr (CA) Kohl (WI) Harkin (IA) Call the Capitol Switchboard at 202-225-3121 and ask for your Senator or Representative. When the call is transferred, ask for the legislative aide covering appropriations for agriculture. Give that aide the message. If you get voice mail, leave the message on the tape. If you cannot speak to the aide directly, leave your message with the receptionist and ask that the message get delivered to the Senator or Representative.

You can find your Senators by going here.

You can find your Representatives name and contacts numbers here.
