Another Oregon Dairy Bans Monsanto's Bovine Growth Hormone (rBGH)

EBERHARD'S DAIRY GOES rBGH-FREE!

Eberhard's Dairy, a highly-respected and well-known fixture in Central Oregon since 1951, will announce in the near future that as of June 1, it had obtained signed affadavits from all of its suppliers that they do not use recombinant bovine growth hormone.

The dairy produces milk, ice cream, cottage cheese, butter and sour cream. Not only will all the fresh milk it uses be rBGH-free, but also any milk ingredients, such as powder.

Eberhard's will label their products rBGH-free, but it will take a while as they use up packaging inventory they already have on hand. Their products are sold at Ray's Food Place, Sentry, Albertson's, Fred Meyer, Safeway, and most independent food stores in central Oregon.

I had met with the company president and owner, Bob Eberhard, in May 2004, to give him our Power Point presentation. We had a good discussion then and I appreciated that he invited me in to give him our information, even though he was allowing rBGH to be used (that doesn't happen with every dairy!).

Over the past year, a number of our volunteers in central Oregon had contacted Eberhard to ask them to go rBGH-free. Our thanks to everyone who took the time to express their opinions to Eberhard's.

Eberhard's now becomes the second dairy in Oregon to go rBGH-free in the past two months, joining Tillamook, which officailly went rBGH-free for any cheese produced after April 1, 2005 (not yet for their butter, ice cream, yogurt and sour cream). Previously, Umpqua Dairy, in Roseburg, went rBGH-free in November 2003. The trend is very, very encouraging, and Oregon PSR will continue to expand its efforts toward our goal of an rBGH-free Oregon.

We are very thankful and appreciate this major step by Eberhard's. Please express your appreciation too, by giving them a call at 541-548-5181. Even if you don't live in central Oregon, you may vacation there, have friends and relatives there, etc. There's nothing quite like hearing from happy consumers to reinforce their decision - we know that from our grass roots responses to Tillamook!
